What's the difference: Fiberglass vs. Cellulose Paper Media

With more than 50 collective years of experience in the industry of evaporative cooling we have heard just about every question concerning cooling. One of the most common questions we get is the differences in media materials. We distribute the top industry brands for evaporative cooling media.

We offer Kuul Products and their Control Series; Kuul Media and their new FirePro

We offer Munters' GLASdek and CELdek

We want the best for our customers and our industry so we are honored to sell for both of these manufacturers. Both manufactures make top industry products to make your installation as efficient as possible. So what are some of the materials used in these top brands?

There are two main material used:

Fiberglass media:

Munters' GLASdek and Kuul's Firepro

Cellulose Paper media:

Munters' CELdek and Kuul Media

Fiberglass Media
Cellulose Paper Media

What is the difference between the two materials, and is one better than the other?

First off, both fiberglass media and cellulose paper media are incredibly similar in performance and efficiency. They are both engineered to bring you the most for your evaporative cooling needs. Both materials are corrugated to maximize the contact area between the air and water, so efficiency levels and how they work are similar, but there is still one thing that sets the two materials apart.

The biggest difference between the two materials has to do with fire. Fiberglass media is engineered to be fire resistant and is certified to pass UL 900 standards. There are many locations that call for fire resistant material especially if they are locations prone to have electrical, sparking, and or flame in the area. The fiberglass media is designed to handle these certain locations, just in case. Cellulose paper media is just as efficient but when any sort of flame comes near a dry piece, it won't take long for the whole unit to go up in flame. Now you know a little more about the different materials.

We invite you to watch the video below to learn more and see our own demonstration of fire resistance:
